Gearbox
is a Renault NG3 5-speed taken from a 1982 Turbo Fuego. This unit
couples directly to the original Lotus Europa Twin Cam bell housing.
Since the NG3 input shaft is designed to use a roller bearing mounted
in the bell housing instead of a standard pilot bearing, the housing must
be modified to accept the original Renault bearing/seal assembly.
This requires building up the TC bell housing with weld metal, then re-boring
it to accept the bearing.
Gearbox output
shafts are taken from the Renault Type 365 5-speed gearbox (Europa Special)
which drop directly into the NG3. Halfshafts are fabricated using
VW type III axles welded to the original Lotus U-joint yokes.
Shift linkage
is custom made but similar in design to the original Lotus 4-speed assembly.
Gear change feel is excellent. Note that since the Ford oil pump
mounts on the right hand side of the motor, the shift linkage must be
moved to the left side of the car. This requires a modified shift
shaft to allow shifting from the left side of the gearbox. The second
photo above show the modified shift shaft and the associated aluminum
seal assembly welded to the gearbox's rear cover.
